This Canner makes preserving food so much easier. I have used other canners in the past, but this brand is my favorite by far. I use it to water can and pressure can food. If you are water bath canning, simply don’t twist and lock the lid, just set it on top and you can water bath can that way.
Not only is canned fruit a convenient snack option for kids’ lunches, but it’s also easy to pack for on-the-go meals. This recipe can be customized with either water or light syrup made with sugar or honey, allowing you to adjust the sweetness to your liking.

To make your mandarin oranges sweet, you can make a light syrup with either sugar or honey. For a sugar syrup, mix 2 cups of sugar with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Increase the ratio as needed. For a honey syrup, mix 1 1/2 cups of honey with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Increase at this ratio as needed. If you need more syrup, increase by using the same ratios as listed above.
Peel the oranges and remove as much white membrane as possible. You can divide the oranges into sections or leave very small citrus varieties whole.
Pack the oranges tightly into canning jars, leaving at least 1/2 inch headspace.
Pour boiling syrup over the oranges, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Remove air with a canning knife, wipe rims, and adjust 2-piece lids to finger tightness.
Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes for both pints and quarts.
Remove jars from the water bath and place them on a folded towel on the counter. Allow them to cool completely before moving.
Process in boiling water for 15 minutes if above 1,000 feet elevation.
Canned oranges can last up to 2-3 years if stored properly in a cool, dry place. Once opened, the oranges should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within a week.
Canned mandarin oranges can be used in a variety of recipes, such as fruit salads, smoothies, cakes, and muffins. You can also use them as a topping for pancakes or waffles.
The USDA recommends using a pressure canner to can mandarin oranges. Water bath canning is not recommended for mandarin oranges due to their low acidity level.
